Take one of our 2014 workshops

Plainly Speaking will offer three public workshops in Ottawa in fall 2014. Take the time to enhance your messaging skills while networking with other professionals in the heart of downtown.

Each full-day workshop will give you an opportunity to work on your own writing project or campaign messaging. Learn how to write winning web content with our one-day Writing for the Web workshop. Prepare your messaging for an upcoming social media and media campaign during our full-day  Media Messaging course. If you are working on a report, presentation, publication, marketing collateral or other written material, take part in our Plain Language Writing workshop to strengthen your message and make sure it hits the mark with your audience.

To register for one of our fall workshops, visit Plainly Speaking on Eventbrite or send us an email at for more details.

Why plain language matters to us

Plain language is clear. It’s communication that people understand the first time around. What’s more, it saves organizations time and money. Just as importantly, it serves your reader, web user or listener while also serving you.

Why? It’s designed for quick and easy consumption. It’s not about dumbing down information; it’s about raising the bar with clear content and engaging messaging. Plain language is personal and it has personality.

At Plainly Speaking, our backgrounds in journalism and corporate communications took us down the plain language path. After years of telling stories and working with clients to improve the way they tell theirs, we learned that the most direct route to success is through plain language. We believe in it.

We are members of the Plain Language Association International and the Center for Plain Language in Washington, DC. We have delivered our workshops, courses, seminars and webinars to hundreds of professionals in the federal government, private sector and not-for-profit community. Their feedback tells us that we’re hitting the mark. We look forward to helping you do the same.

Our award-winning story

Getting recognition for your work is truly an honour. In 2013, the Center for Plain Language in Washington, DC recognized us with two plain language awards. What a thrill! The ClearMark Awards, held at the National Press Club, celebrate the best in clear communication from government, non-profits and private companies in the U.S. and internationally.

The first award was a Category Winner for Before and After (Revised Documents). “Why Community-Based Crime Prevention Works: Case Studies of Three Ottawa Communities” was a project we completed for Crime Prevention Ottawa. In the words of the judges, it was:

“Brilliant. Visually engaging.  Effective document design.”

“Major transformation from the original.”

The second award was an Award of Distinction in the Web category for the Neighbourhood Toolkit. This online crime prevention resource also received glowing reviews from the judges:

“This site is clearly the result of extensive collaboration and input from the groups and people it is for.”

“This is a consistently well written site. It provides practical, useful information for residents. A good example of best practice web writing in action.”

We look forward to teaching you our award-winning skills. We consider that a privilege too.
